"My life is living proof that benevolence has the power to completely rewrite a human destiny. I do not stand here today solely because of my own strength, but because a chain of compassionate people refused to let my story end in poverty.
My journey was broken open by deep, unexpected heartbreak. When I was a young child in primary school in Ghana, my parents went through a painful divorce. Almost overnight, our world shattered. Finance became agonizingly tight, and the crisis deepened when my father lost his job. At the time, I was blessed to be enrolled in one of the best schools in the country, but suddenly, we could no longer afford to be there. The financial weight was too heavy for my mother to bear alone. I watched in heartbreak as my brothers were forced to drop out of school entirely because the fees were simply impossible.
I was only two years away from sitting for my BECE exams, and my future hung by a thread. Facing the terrifying reality of dropping out and losing my education, my mother fought to keep me in school, leaning heavily on the vital support of a kind uncle. But the road only grew steeper. When the time came to transition to Senior Secondary School (SSS), the math of our poverty was cruel: my mother could not afford fees for all three of us. The heartbreaking decision was made that I would have to drop out completely so that my brothers could have a chance to go.
It was at that exact moment of despair that grace stepped in. Because of my good grades, my church community at ICGC chose to stand in the gap for my broken family. They took over my fee payments entirely, and that was how my journey was saved, allowing me to successfully complete my SSS education.
Yet, passing my SSCE exams brought a familiar ghost back to our doorstep. Coming from a divorced, struggling family meant that university felt like an impossible dream. Once again, I was preparing to give up on my future. But benevolence spoke louder than our poverty. Members of my church community stepped forward out of pure love; they physically picked up university application forms for me, sat with me, and held my hand through the scholarship process. ICGC came through a second time, awarding me a partial scholarship that covered my entire four-year university degree. The remaining half of my tuition, along with the very books on my desk and the clothes on my back, were paid for entirely through the pure benevolence of others.
I am here today—holding my BSc in Accounting and my MBA—simply because a community of people chose to reach down into the dark and lift me up when my family was broken.
That is why accepting a membership with the Ernest Initiative is not a casual choice for me; it is a profound, lifelong calling. I know exactly what it feels like to be a child standing on the edge of a forgotten future due to circumstances completely beyond their control. I know the heavy sadness of a tight kitchen, a broken home, and a mother’s tears. But I also know the structural magic that happens when an organization decides to invest in a child's life.
By joining the Ernest Initiative, I am bringing my financial background, my corporate strategic mind, and my deeply personal story to this table. I am turning my past pain into a living promise to the next generation. We are not just giving out resources; we are actively rescuing futures, restoring hope, and transforming a child's 'once upon a time' into a life of endless possibility.
